It’s All Under Control

When something is out of control, it can at best be frustrating. At its worst, as we’ve seen right here in the Hill Country, it can be devastating. We know this in our daily lives, especially when we’re trying to keep everything together. We want to get things done, when and how we imagine them getting done. If we’re thrown off course, all hell can break loose. We want things neat and tidy — now, and thank you very much. Right? Then we get slapped around a little by reality, unexpected variables messing with our grand design.

We work so hard trying to control everything, and every once in a while, we’re taught we just need to let go.

We had other plans for our cover story. That was that. Until it wasn’t. Our invitation to be featured in this magazine was met with a counter offer: a custom-tailored, written statement. So we pivoted. We charged our editor with scoring an interview with the indelible Texas storyteller Robert Earl Keen. Was it easy? Nope. Jen tried and tried and tried again. We knew she could do it. And you know what? It paid off. She got the interview, and as you’ll see, it was worth not getting what we originally thought we wanted. Funny how that works. We work so hard trying to control everything, and every once in a while, we’re taught we just need to let go. The outcome turned out to be serendipitous. That’s a fancy way of saying fortunate. We’ll take it.
